Mt Adams or Bust | Launch Date: March, 2024 |
This blog is dedicated to the team of Roger Matthews and Jerry Martin, who are planning a climb of Mt Adams in June or July of 2024. Our plan is to climb to the Lunch Counter in two days and spend a rest day there. The Lunch Counter is a large half-mile square area at the 9,000' level where most people spend the first night. At the evening of the rest day, my niece, Genie Lieser and a group of climbing gals will arrive at the Lunch Counter, and the next morning, we'll all head for the summit. For young folks, that is a 4-5 hour climb. For old me, more like a 7 hour climb. The plan is, Jerry will switch from me to Genie's group, and they will absolutely summit. I will be trudging far behind, slow step by slow step.
When they are done at the summit, and the rest of the gals are all barreling down the mountain heading for the cars (it takes youngters only 4 hours from summit to cars),Genie and Jerry will meet up with me. If I am still on track for the summit, then Genie, and Jerry if he is up to it, will TURN AROUND, and accompany me back up to the summit. Genie said that unlike the rest of the gals, she doesn't have to be back at work the next day :).
So...interesting plan. This way, Jerry DEFINITELY makes the summit, and I will if I can. Great plan! This will all take place on a weekend near the end of June or early July. It depends on when the 20 mile forest service road to Cold Springs Camp, the trailhead, melts out. Once it melts out, we go! There is about a 3 week window when the conditions are good. After that, it become too difficult for an old guy like me. :
So...that's the plan, amigos :).
